1. Go strawberry picking with the family

One of our favourite things to do in spring in Perth is to visit a farm and go strawberry picking. Given the current price of strawberries at the supermarkets in Perth, pick your own is great value for money and a fun weekend activity to do with the kids as most allow you to eat as you pick.

There a number of options for strawberry picking in Perth – some north, some south, and lots of variation in pricing and opening hours. For our favourite farms check out our Guide on The Best Strawberry Picking in Perth. As the strawberry season varies, we recommend checking directly with the farms for opening hours and the availability of fruit.

2. Take a wildflower road trip

The stunning wildflower displays in Coalseam Conservation Park

Western Australia boasts some of the world’s most stunning wildflowers, and during early spring the mid west region bursts into colour. So why not pack the car and head out of Perth to wildflower country, where fields of yellow, pink and white everlastings paint the roadsides and plains.

Many of the prime wildflower spots are 3-5 hours north and inland from Perth, making an overnight stay or weekend camping trip the most practical way to fully enjoy the experience. For full details on where the flowers are blooming this year, read our Guide on The Best Spots for Western Australian Wildflowers in 2024.

3. Enjoy a mystery picnic in Perth

Embark on a self-guided foodie adventure by solving clues and discovering hidden gems with Amazing Co. We recently enjoyed a mystery picnic in the Chittering Valley – there many other picnic locations available around Perth. Our journey took us to local artisan producers to collect gourmet picnic ingredients, ending at a stunning picnic spot where we spread our rug and enjoyed the sunshine and food. We added the ‘Premium’ upgrade and a bottle of wine which made it extra special. We don’t want to give too much away so you can enjoy your own experience – but it’s such a fun thing to do during spring in Perth!!

4. Witness the golden canola fields of the Avon Valley

Golden canola fields of the Avon Valley

Spring is the perfect season for a day trip to York. With canola fields in flower between late August to October, the golden hues of this country region around one hour from Perth are simply magical. Drawing tourists for their expansive and vibrant beauty, it’s crucial to respect that all canola fields in the Avon Valley are on private property, and visitors should refrain from walking through the paddocks. For those seeking an up-close experience with canola fields, PetTeet Park in Gilgering (30-minute drive from York) offers a designated canola field for walking through or photos in the crop.

5. Visit a market or spring festival

Perth has plenty of markets and festivals to offer during the spring months. The most well-known spring festivals include the Araluen Tulip Festival and the S & R Orchard Blossom Festival. At these events, you’ll be treated to spectacular colourful spring blooms along with food trucks and activities for the kids.

Other markets to check out during spring are the Perth Upmarket on the picturesque grounds of The University of Western Australia in September, Markets by the Quay – Spring Carnival in October, Summer Salt Markets in October and for a great Friday night feed in the city the Perth Twilight Food Market return to Forrest Place in October.

6. Watch an outdoor movie with city views

Open from late October, Rooftop Movies is Perth’s first rooftop cinema, located atop a multi-story carpark in Northbridge. Screening a variety of films from cult classics to recent releases it’s an open-air cinema experience like no other. Serving sunset drinks, eats and movies under the stars it’s a fun thing to do as the evenings warm up during spring in Perth. Many screenings sell out well in advance, so make sure to jump online and book your tickets from the Rooftop website.

7. Get your fill of rides at the Perth Royal Show

When the Perth Royal Show rolls up in town, we know spring has officially sprung. It’s undoubtedly one of the best, most iconic events on our City’s calendar. Held every year in September (21-28 September 2024) it’s a celebration of community, agriculture and fun! And even better yet, thanks to the WA Government, adults are half-price and children 15 and under are FREE. With more food, rides, showbags, attractions and fun than you can poke a dagwood dog at, you’re just not doing spring in Perth right if you miss the Perth Royal Show.

8. See wildflowers at the Everlasting Kings Park Festival

Not able to go north for the wildflowers? Not to worry, here’s an great alternative! During spring, thousands of wildflowers and more than 3,000 WA plant species are on display at Kings Park and Botanic Gardens in the heart of Perth. The Everlasting Kings Park Festival has run every September since 1964 featuring dozens of fabulous workshops, displays, guided walks and talks, family activities and much more. Throughout September there are events for everyone to enjoy in Perth’s favourite park.

9. Get outdoors in nature for a hike

Spring offers excellent weather for hiking in Perth. Some of our favourite long trails are Kitty’s Gorge Trail a 16km return hike from Jarrahdale to Serpentine Dam, and the 15km Eagle View Walk through Glen Forrest National Park. Great family trails include the Roley Pools Walk Trail in Roleystone, the 2.6km Woodlands Walk in Yanchep National Park (take a picnic for lunch in this gorgeous park) or the 2.1km Sixty Foot Falls Trail in Ellis Brook Valley that provides stunning views and a chance to connect with nature. Spring is great time for hiking in Perth before the summer temperatures soar and for wildflowers.
